ML (S) Award

The mountains of the UK are remote, technical and exposed to harsh and unpredictable weather. This makes them a hazardous place for a group of novice mountain walkers unless they have the benefit of supervision by a well trained and experienced leader. The ML award is for those who wish to lead a group of hill walkers anywhere in the UK under summer conditions During Mountain Leader Award courses you will develop group management skills, the ability to navigate in all conditions, gain an understanding of how to deal with mountain hazards and increase your awareness of environmental issues. There is also an expedition element to the syllabus.

ML (S) Training

Before undertaking the ML training course you need to have a minimum of 12 months mountain walking experience and have logged at least 20 quality mountain day walks. You may register with the ML scheme before you have completed 20 mountain days, but you must fulfill this requirement before attending the training course.

During our ML (S) training course we will look at the practical skills and technical aspects required by a leader to safely look after a group walking or camping in the hills. We cover navigation, safety on steep ground, group management, camping, weather conditions, emergency procedures, (including the use of a rope) and we discuss issues affecting the environment. The course is mostly practical based and some may find the course physically demanding, although there will be some theory based sessions and interest talks. Hopefully during the course we will find ourselves in adverse weather conditions, which will allow us to bring out the best in your navigational abilities!

ML (S) Refresher If you need some refresher training before attending your ML (S) assessment then we can provide an instructor for a one or two day revision course, (the two day can include a night under canvas). Please EMAIL us to discuss your dates and choice of the one or two day package. We can arrange accommodation for you or just meet you on the hill.
