single pitch award (SPA)

Climbing Wall Award

This scheme is for climbers who are in a position of responsibility when supervising climbing activities on indoor or outdoor climbing walls, artificial boulders and towers. It is primarily concerned with ensuring good practice, leading to the safe enjoyment of climbing activities, and to an understanding of the sport. It covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing, excluding the teaching of leading.

We can offer the CWA to groups of four or more registered candidates on request, please EMAIL us.

Single Pitch Award

This award is for those who wish to supervise a group on single pitch crags and climbing walls. Single Pitch Award Training

Before you apply for the two day training course please make sure you can answer yes to the following:

  • Have you registered with the MLTE?

  • Have you led at least 15 routes outdoors on leader placed protection?

  • Have you completed your logbook so far?

The SPA training course is run over two days, (with evening discussions and presentations), by highly experienced and qualified instructors who have been approved by the MLTE. During the course we will look at lead climbing techniques including gear placement and belaying methods on single pitch climbs. We will discuss and practise top rope rigging and supervision/management of groups at outdoor and indoor venues and cover group abseiling procedures. We encourage you to bring along your own climbing equipment as this always adds spice to the equipment "upkeep and maintenance" discussion! The 2 days will be run as a training course and will be presented at a level relevant to your experience and knowledge of climbing prior to your attendance.
